In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011)
Angelina Jolie wrote, produced and directed the war drama film In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011). Set in Sarajevo during 1992, it follows Ajla Ekmečić, an ethnic Bosniak artist living with her single mother sister and baby nephew. One night, she meets her boyfriend Danijel Vukojević, a police officer from the Serb community at a club. Sadly, the evening is cut short when artillery fire destroys the club and leaves Danijel injured. This event marks the beginning of the Bosnian War. As time passes and the city becomes besieged, Ajla and her sister plan to flee but are unable to do so before their neighborhood falls under control of the Army of Republika Srpska. In this turn of events, men and women are separated and executed while Ajla and other young women are taken by bus to a Serb rape camp.
At the camp, the soldiers inform the women about their new lifestyle and inquire about their capabilities. Esma, a doctor, volunteers to provide medical aid. Another woman offers her sewing skills. Before a soldier can ask Ajla for her talents, the commander of the camp intervenes. It is revealed that he is none other than Danijel, causing a sense of shock for the former couple as they come to terms with their situation. The forbidden nature of inter-ethnic relationships adds to their dilemma, as any proof of their past connection could put both Danijel and his father Nebojša at risk due to his position as a General in the VRS Main Staff.
