In the Valley of Elah (2007)
Paul Haggis wrote and directed the American crime drama film, In the Valley of Elah (2007). The story follows Hank Deerfield, a retired military police sergeant living in Monroe, Tennessee with his wife Joan. On November 1, 2004, Hank receives news that his son Mike, a soldier who had recently returned from Iraq, is missing. Determined to find him, Hank makes the trip to New Mexico where Mike’s base is located. Along the way, he stops to help a school custodian raise the American flag correctly. At Fort Rudd, he meets Mike’s squad and manages to sneak away with his son’s cell phone from his belongings. After watching some videos on the phone, Hank tries to report Mike’s disappearance to detective Emily Sanders but she is preoccupied with a woman whose dog has been killed. He also reaches out to an old friend at Army CID for help but unfortunately doesn’t receive any assistance.
Fort Rudd has taken charge of the case, as they believe evidence found under Mike’s mattress and recent arrests for heroin smuggling suggest that his murder may be drug-related. Hank successfully convinces Sanders to take him to the crime scene, where he makes a crucial discovery – the green car reported at the scene was actually blue. Despite facing criticism from her male colleagues, Sanders is able to convince the local sheriff to join in on the investigation. Additionally, fellow squad member SPC Gordon Bonner contacts Hank for assistance. Joan, Mike’s mother, returns home after viewing her son’s remains and receives a package that Mike had sent himself. Despite Hank’s advice not to open it, she does so anyways. The two investigators use Mike’s credit card history to trace his steps and find themselves at a restaurant, where Hank concludes that Mike had dined with at least two other individuals shortly before his death.
