Prior to its official premiere, a sneak peek of the debut episode was released online by Syfy on November 16, 2016. Set in a dystopian version of Milwaukee in 2074, the show portrays a world where various crises and climate change have caused many countries to go bankrupt. In place of functioning governments, huge multinational corporations now act as de facto rulers in designated areas known as Green Zones. The remaining regions are referred to as Red Zones, with little or no governing authority.
Ben Larson, a manager at Spiga Biotech, works under Elizabeth, the estranged mother of his wife Laura. Despite being a climate refugee from the Red Zone outside Milwaukee, Ben has assumed the identity of Aaron to infiltrate the Green Zone and search for Elena, his childhood love. Unfortunately, she has ended up as a high-end prostitute at an exclusive brothel for senior Spiga executives. Determined to rescue her, Aaron frames his boss Chad for stealing classified information and secures his dismissal from the company. He then strives for a promotion to access Arcadia and save Elena, all while maintaining his Ben Larson cover under intense scrutiny from Spiga security and cut-throat coworkers. Thankfully, he has support from Theo, Elena’s brother still living in the Red Zone, and Reed, another resident who successfully assumed a Green Zone persona before Aaron.
