Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) is a American action adventure film helmed by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by David Koepp based on a story by George Lucas and Jeff Nathanson. In 1957, Soviet agents, led by Colonel Doctor Irina Spalko, abduct beloved archaeologist Indiana Jones along with his partner, George ‘Mac’ McHale. They infiltrate Hangar 51 in Nevada to coerce Jones into locating a mummified alien from Roswell. Despite being betrayed by Mac, Jones successfully locates the mummy but narrowly escapes capture at the test site for an atomic bomb. He cleverly survives the blast in a lead-lined refrigerator housed in one of the mock towns before being rescued and questioned by the FBI. Upon returning to Marshall College, he discovers that he has been placed on leave indefinitely. But just when it seems like things couldn’t get any worse, Mutt Williams – a young greaser – approaches him with some intriguing news: Ox, their former colleague, may have found a crystal skull in Peru during his quest for the legendary city of Akator.
Despite a failed attempt by Soviet agents to capture them, the two manage to flee and make their way to Peru. Along the way, they stumble upon carvings created by Ox which ultimately lead them to Francisco de Orellana’s grave. Inside, they discover an elongated crystal skull. However, their escape is short-lived as they are soon taken captive by the Soviets and brought to a camp deep in the Amazon rainforest. To their surprise, they are joined by Mac, Spalko, an impaired Ox, and Marion Ravenwood (Mutt’s mother). It is at this point that Jones learns he has a son in Mutt. Spalko reveals her intention to use the skulls for Soviet propaganda through telepathic projection onto Americans’ minds. Jones then experiences a brief connection with the skull itself, realizing that it is urging him to bring it back to Akator. With renewed determination, Jones deciphers Ox’s automatic writing and discovers a path leading towards the city.
