Inferno (2016), an American action mystery thriller film directed by Ron Howard and written by David Koepp, is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Dan Brown. Following his involvement in halting an antimatter threat at the Vatican, Harvard professor Robert Langdon wakes up in a Florence hospital with no recollection of recent events, but haunted by terrifying visions. His attending physician, Dr. Sienna Brooks, explains that his amnesia is a result of being shot in the head. A staff member warns them that police have arrived to question Langdon, but it turns out to be Vayentha, an assassin who ends up killing the staff member. With Brooks’ help, Langdon escapes and they seek refuge in her apartment. Amongst his belongings there, they discover a Faraday pointer with a projected image of Sandro Botticelli’s Map of Hell – inspired by Dante’s Inferno.
As they come to realize, this is the initial clue in a trail left by Bertrand Zobrist, an unstable villain who strongly believed in extreme measures to control the Earth’s rising population. He tragically took his own life three days prior, while being pursued by armed government agents. Langdon and Brooks deduce that Zobrist, fixated on Dante, has engineered a bioweapon dubbed ‘Inferno’ with the potential to wipe out half of humanity. In the meantime, they are being tracked by both Vayentha and government agents, prompting them to flee once more. The team of agents is led by Elizabeth Sinskey, a former lover of Langdon’s. Vayentha works for her employer Harry Sims, the CEO of a private security firm known as ‘The Consortium’, acting on behalf of Zobrist and tasked with eliminating Langdon as he has become a liability.
