In the martial arts drama film, The Karate Kid (2010), directed by Harald Zwart, 12-year-old Dre Parker and his widowed mother Sherry move to Beijing due to her job transfer at a car factory. While there, Dre forms a connection with Meiying, a young violinist. However, their budding relationship is hindered by Cheng, a rebellious Kung Fu prodigy whose family is close to Meiying’s. Cheng constantly bullies and attacks Dre as revenge for an incident at the Forbidden City during a school trip. One day, after being viciously beaten by Cheng and his gang in an alleyway, Mr Han steps in to defend Dre. It is revealed that Mr Han is a Kung Fu Master and he uses ancient Chinese medicine techniques like fire cupping to heal Dre’s injuries. Prior to this encounter, Mr Han had previously done repairs in their apartment building and knew Dre.

As Mr. Han explains, Cheng and his friends have not been taught to be inherently bad, but rather to be merciless towards their enemies by their teacher, Master Li. Intrigued, Dre asks if Han would be willing to teach him the ways of Kung Fu. Although initially hesitant, Mr. Han eventually agrees to accompany Dre to Li’s Fighting Dragons studio in hopes of making peace. However, Li harshly rejects the offer and challenges Dre to a fight with Cheng. Instead of giving in to the challenge, Mr. Han suggests that Dre compete against all of Li’s students at an upcoming Kung Fu tournament. He also requests that Dre be left alone to train until then. After some reluctance, Li agrees as long as Dre shows up for the tournament. As Dre trains under Mr. Han’s guidance, he learns that Kung Fu is not just about punches and power but also about serenity and maturity in life in general.
