Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Inglourious Basterds (2009) is an alternative history war film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The plot centers around two intersecting plans to assassinate the leaders of Nazi Germany at a Paris cinema. One operation is carried out by a team of Jewish American soldiers under the command of First Lieutenant Aldo Raine, while the other is led by French Jewish cinema owner Shosanna Dreyfus, seeking revenge for her family’s murder. Both are up against SS colonel Hans Landa, infamous for his brutal persecution of Jews. The title was inspired by a 1978 Euro War film called The Inglorious Bastards, but Tarantino’s version is not a remake. Originally written in 1998, Tarantino struggled with the ending and instead chose to direct Kill Bill as a two-part film. Inglourious Basterds was filmed in Germany and France with a budget of $70 million and was met with worldwide success, grossing over $321.5 million at the box office. Critics praised Christoph Waltz’s performance as Hans Landa, but some took issue with the historical inaccuracies portrayed in the movie. It also received multiple awards and nominations.
In 1941, SS-Standartenführer Hans Landa interrogates French farmer Perrier LaPadite, suspecting that the LaPadites are hiding a Jewish family, the Dreyfuses. Upon confirmation from LaPadite that they are indeed hiding the Dreyfuses under their floorboards, Landa has the hidden family shot. However, he allows Shosanna Dreyfus to escape. Three years later, U.S. Army Lieutenant Aldo Raine enlists Jewish-American soldiers to join his black ops commando unit known as the ‘Basterds’. This elite group executes fear among Nazis in occupied France by killing and scalping them. The Basterds include Sergeant Donny ‘The Bear Jew’ Donowitz, rogue German Sergeant Hugo Stiglitz, and Austrian-born translator Corporal Wilhelm Wicki.
