In this film from Pixar Animation Studios, Inside Out 2 (2024) we once again join Riley Andersen as she embarks on a new chapter of her life. Now 14 years old and starting high school in San Francisco, Riley’s emotions – Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger – oversee a special area of her mind called the ‘Sense of Self’. This space contains memories and emotions that shape Riley’s beliefs. With Joy determined to fill this area with only positive memories, she has devised a way to push negative ones to the back of Riley’s mind. As a result, Riley is excited to participate in an ice hockey camp over the weekend with her friends Bree and Grace in hopes of making the Firehawks team at her school. However, an unexpected disruption occurs when a ‘Puberty Alarm’ goes off the night before camp and some mind workers try to upgrade the emotion console. The result? Headquarters is thrown into chaos.
Riley, now prone to overreaction, experiences a clash between her original emotions and four new additions – Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui. As Joy strives for fun at camp, Anxiety prioritizes making friends and securing a spot on the team. However, things take a turn when Riley discovers Bree and Grace will attend a different high school. In an attempt to fit in with the older players, Anxiety pushes Joy to the side and imprisons her along with Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust in a memory vault. Meanwhile, Envy, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Anxiety create a new version of Riley’s Sense of Self focused on anxiety. This leads to Riley befriending popular hockey player Val Ortiz but strains her relationship with Bree and Grace.
