The American supernatural horror film, Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), helmed by James Wan, tells the story of Lorraine Lambert and her son Josh. In 1986, Lorraine enlists demonologist Elise Rainier’s help in dealing with the malevolent spirit of an old woman dressed in black that has been tormenting Josh. During their investigation at home, Elise is physically attacked by an unseen force, prompting her to urge them to suppress Josh’s astral projection abilities and implant false memories in his mind for his own safety. Two decades later, Josh’s wife Renai is being interrogated by a detective regarding Elise’s death. She is warned that if they find Josh’s fingerprints at the crime scene, he will be charged with murder. In response, Josh, Renai and their children – Dalton, Foster and Cali – move into Lorraine’s house for the time being, only to encounter eerie paranormal occurrences once again.
Dalton shares with his mother his unsettling dreams featuring a woman in a white gown, and also mentions overhearing Josh speaking to an unseen presence. Renai receives a call from the police confirming that Josh’s fingerprints do not match those found at the scene. Shortly after, a spectral woman dressed in white materializes and attacks Renai, while Josh is haunted by a voice urging him to harm his loved ones. Specs and Tucker, colleagues of Elise’s, present Lorraine with footage from the 1986 investigation, enhanced to reveal an adult version of Josh standing behind his younger self. Seeking guidance from another former colleague of Elise’s, Carl attempts to communicate with her spirit. They are directed to an abandoned hospital where Lorraine used to work as a physician for answers. Lorraine recounts events from twenty-five years ago when she treated a patient named Parker Crane who had been admitted for attempting self-castration and later went on to attack young Josh.
