Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), a supernatural horror film, was written and directed by Leigh Whannell in his directorial debut. Serving as a prequel to the previous two films in the Insidious franchise, it tells the story of teenager Quinn Brenner and her encounter with retired demonologist Elise Rainier. In 2007, three years before the Lambert haunting, Quinn sought out Elise’s help in contacting her deceased mother Lily. Despite sensing a malicious presence, Elise reluctantly agreed to assist. While still grappling with grief over her mother’s passing, Quinn also encountered strange occurrences involving an elderly neighbor with dementia named Grace. These events culminated in a fateful day where Quinn is hit by a car after seeing an unknown figure on the street.
Trapped in her home with family members Sean and Alex, Quinn begins to encounter increasingly unsettling supernatural occurrences. These include haunting visions of a malevolent entity known as the Man Who Can’t Breathe, who she now realizes caused her accident. Meanwhile, Sean crosses paths with Harry, the husband of the late Grace, and learns of her passing. Seeking help for his daughter, Sean turns to Elise, who is grieving over the loss of her own husband Jack. However, Elise is hesitant due to her previous encounters in the Further with a vengeful spirit called the Bride in Black. Despite this, Carl persuades her to use her spiritual abilities once again by reminding her of her successful past case involving Josh Lambert in 1986 and assuring her that she is stronger than any spirits because she is still alive.
