Insidious: The Last Key (2018), an American supernatural horror film directed by Adam Robitel and written by Leigh Whannell, follows a story that progresses through the events of the Insidious franchise. This fourth installment takes place in Five Keys, New Mexico in 1953. Elise Rainier lives there with her parents Audrey and Gerald, as well as her younger brother Christian. When they encounter a ghost in their bedroom, Christian searches for help but is unable to find the whistle their mother gave him. In response, Gerald locks Elise up after caning her for not finding it. Despite this, Elise opens a mysterious red doorway and is briefly possessed by a demonic spirit, causing the death of Audrey. Decades later in California in 2010, Elise works alongside her colleagues Specs and Tucker as a paranormal investigator. A man named Ted Garza contacts them about experiencing paranormal activity at his house. Upon realizing it’s the same house she grew up in, Elise immediately responds to his plea for help.
While investigating, the group discovers Christian’s missing whistle, but it disappears again after encountering a female spirit. Elise later explains to Specs and Tucker that she had encountered the same spirit during her teenage years while fleeing from her abusive father, leaving Christian behind. The trio then meets Melissa and Imogen, Christian’s daughters, who are understandably upset with Elise for abandoning their father. In an attempt to restore their relationship, Elise gives Melissa a photo of the whistle and instructs her to show it to Christian. Meanwhile, Elise and Tucker stumble upon a hidden room in the basement with the help of the female spirit. They soon uncover a young woman being held captive by Ted, who admits to his wrongdoings before attempting to harm Specs. In self-defense, Specs kills Ted as they become trapped in the room.
