Insomnia (2002), a psychological thriller directed by Christopher Nolan and written by Hillary Seitz, stands out in Nolan’s filmography as the only project he did not also write. It is a remake of the similarly titled 1997 Norwegian film. Set in the small fishing village of Nightmute, Alaska, the story begins with the murder of 17-year-old Kay Connell. Detectives Will Dormer and Hap Eckhart from the LAPD are called in by their old friend and chief of police, Nyback, to assist with the investigation. Meanwhile, Dormer is under scrutiny from Internal Affairs and Eckhart is planning to testify against him in exchange for immunity. Local detective Ellie Burr picks them up upon their arrival. Dormer manages to attract the murderer to the scene of the crime but they escape into the fog, injuring one police officer. In pursuit, Dormer catches a glimpse of someone in the fog and fires his backup weapon before approaching to find a .38 pistol left behind by the suspect.
After realizing he had accidentally shot Eckhart, Dormer knew that Internal Affairs would never believe it was an accident due to Eckhart’s pending testimony. In order to cover up the truth, Dormer falsely claims that the suspect shot Eckhart and deliberately neglects to mention that he was in possession of the .38 pistol. The shooting investigation is led by Burr and her team, who discover the .38 caliber bullet that had struck Eckhart’s leg. That same night, Dormer heads to an alley where he fires off the .38 pistol into a dead animal before retrieving and cleaning the bullet. Later at the morgue, he swaps out the original .38 bullet for a 9mm one from Eckhart’s body. Although a staffer hands him the collected bullet from Eckhart, she is not familiar with its type.
