Interstellar (2014), an epic science fiction film by Christopher Nolan, follows humanity in the near future as it faces extinction due to ecocide-induced global famine. Cooper’s family, including his children Tom and Murph, and father-in-law Donald, works on a farm like most of the surviving population. One night during a dust storm, Cooper and Murph stumble upon a strange gravitational disturbance in her bedroom. This anomaly ultimately leads them to NASA’s secret facility, long thought to be defunct. There they discover that NASA is planning a mission through a wormhole near Saturn to reach three potentially habitable planets in another galaxy. These planets have been identified thanks to data gathered from previous probe missions orbiting the supermassive black hole Gargantua.
Lead scientist, Dr. Brand, requests that Cooper pilot the mission due to his experience. Despite his initial reservations about leaving his children behind, Cooper assures his daughter Murph that he will return. However, Murph is heartbroken and unable to say goodbye. The spacecraft Endurance departs with three other NASA scientists – Romilly, Doyle, and Amelia, who happens to be Dr. Brand’s daughter – as well as two advanced robots named TARS and CASE. Upon reaching their first destination, the crew discovers a planet covered in oceans with massive tidal waves. Unfortunately, Doyle gets swept away and loses his life in the process. Cooper and Amelia remain on the planet until the water subsides before returning to Endurance, where they find that 23 years have passed for Romilly due to time dilation. On Earth, an adult Murph assists Dr. Brand in solving an equation that will facilitate the mass exodus of humanity from the dying planet.
