Into the Wild (2007)

The American biographical adventure drama film, Into the Wild (2007), was written, co-produced, and directed by Sean Penn. Based on the 1996 non-fiction book by Jon Krakauer of the same name, it tells the story of Chris McCandless who arrives in Healy, a remote area just north of Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Upon realizing McCandless’ lack of preparedness, the man who gives him a ride provides him with gumboots. McCandless then sets up camp in an abandoned city bus that he dubs ‘The Magic Bus’. Enjoying his solitude and surrounded by nature’s beauty, he embraces the challenge of living off the land. Using a .22 for hunting, reading books, and recording his experiences in his journal, he immerses himself in this new way of life.
After receiving high honors from Emory University in May 1990, McCandless becomes disillusioned with modern society upon discovering that he and his sister were born out of wedlock. He rids himself of his credit cards and identification, donates his savings to Oxfam, and embarks on a cross-country journey in his Datsun 210 to explore life in the wilderness. Without informing his parents or sister of his plans or whereabouts, McCandless cuts off all communication with them after leaving. This causes great concern for his family, who become increasingly worried about his well-being. While at Lake Mead, McCandless’ vehicle gets swept away in a flash flood, prompting him to abandon it and hitchhike instead. Using up what little money he has left, he adopts the alias ‘Alexander Supertramp’.
