Into the Woods (2014)
The American musical fantasy film, Into the Woods (2014), from director Rob Marshall and screenplay by James Lapine, is a retelling of the timeless tale. The story follows the Baker and his wife who long for a child but are plagued by a curse placed upon them by the Witch. As it goes, the Witch caught the Baker’s father stealing from her garden while his mother was pregnant and demanded their unborn child as payment. But that wasn’t all – in addition to the baby, the Baker’s father took some enchanted beans which resulted in the Witch being cursed with age and ugliness. With no other option, she offers to lift the curse if they can retrieve four specific items for her potion: a white cow, a red cape, yellow hair, and a golden slipper – though she must not lay hands on any of them.
The Witch’s demands lead the Baker and his wife to encounter a variety of characters. These include Jack, who is in the process of selling his beloved cow, Milky-White. The Baker offers him magic beans that were passed down from his father. Through a series of unexpected events, these beans end up growing into a huge beanstalk. Additionally, they meet Red Riding Hood again, whom they had noticed earlier when she came by their bakery to purchase bread and sweets while on her way to her grandmother’s house. The couple also crosses paths with Rapunzel, who happens to be the Witch’s adopted daughter and the Baker’s biological sister. While exploring the woods, the Baker’s wife stumbles upon her tower. Lastly, they come across Cinderella as she flees from the Prince. Her ball outfit even includes gold slippers that catch the attention of the Baker’s wife.
