Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
Intolerable Cruelty (2003), an American romantic comedy directed by the Coen brothers, follows Donovan Donaly, a TV soap opera producer who discovers his wife Bonnie with an ex-boyfriend. After filing for divorce, Bonnie hires Miles Massey, a renowned divorce attorney known for his ‘Massey pre-nup’ which guarantees airtight prenuptial agreements. As Donaly is left bankrupt from the settlement, private investigator Gus Petch captures wealthy and married Rex Rexroth in a drunken affair with a blonde. When Gus presents the video to Marylin Rexroth, a woman infamous for marrying for money, she demands a hefty property settlement in her divorce. Unable to pay, Rex enlists Miles as his legal representation.
Sarah Sorkin, Marylin’s friend who has been divorced multiple times, warns her that Miles will be a dangerous adversary. Despite efforts from Marylin and her lawyer Freddy Bender, they are unable to come to an agreement with Miles and his associate Rex. One evening, while out together, the charming Miles asks the intriguing Marylin out to dinner and they begin flirting. In the meantime, Gus sneaks into her home and makes copies of her address book for Miles. He then has his assistant search through the names to find any evidence of Marylin’s involvement in arranging predatory marriages. During the trial, Marylin puts on an act of being emotionally distraught over Rex’s infidelity, claiming that she fell in love with him at first sight without hesitation.
