Irma Vep (1996)
Irma Vep (1996), a French comedy-drama film written and directed by Olivier Assayas, tells the story of director René Vidal’s struggles during the making of a film-within-a-film. Playing the heroine, Irma Vep, is Maggie Cheung, sporting a tight black latex catsuit. The character’s name is actually an anagram for vampire and serves as inspiration for the criminal gang known as The Vampires in Feuillade’s original serial. As René and the team watch dailies, he becomes livid with disappointment and storms out, leaving Maggie stranded at the facility. Luckily, she receives an invitation from costume designer Zoé to join other crew members for dinner that evening. There, Zoé reveals to another woman her romantic interest in Maggie, who is later informed by the woman, causing her embarrassment.
Following a dinner with their crew members, Maggie goes to meet René at a hotel after he has a heated altercation with his wife. During their conversation, René confesses that one of his motivations for making the film was his desire to see Maggie in it. Later that night, seemingly influenced by her character, Maggie puts on a catsuit and steals jewelry from a hotel room while an unclothed woman argues on the phone with her partner. She then discards the stolen items. The next morning, an exhausted Maggie is picked up by Zoé from her hotel room. René fails to show up on set and the crew attempts to continue filming without him. As the day ends, haughty director José Mirano meets actress Laure at a bar and informs her that René has suffered a breakdown and that he has been brought in to finish the film.
