Irrational Man (2015)
Irrational Man (2015), an American mystery comedy-drama film by Woody Allen, tells the story of Abe Lucas, a philosophy professor who begins teaching at a small-town college in New England. Struggling with an existential crisis and battling depression, he turns to heavy drinking for comfort. Despite his troubled state, Abe attracts the attention of two women: Rita Richards, a chemistry professor dissatisfied with her marriage, and Jill Pollard, one of his students who is in a serious relationship and lives with her parents. While Abe sleeps with Rita, he maintains a strictly platonic connection with Jill. His depression becomes apparent when he experiences erectile dysfunction during their encounter. Overhearing a nearby conversation in a diner about an unjust family court case that may result in the loss of children, Abe and Jill realize the gravity of the situation.
Distraught by the injustice, Abe concocts a plan to aid the woman by eliminating the judge. He believes his actions will go undetected because he has no prior connection with the judge. This newfound sense of purpose lifts Abe’s spirits and brings him joy, allowing him to engage in intimate relations with Rita once again. Abe observes the judge’s routine, noting that after his weekly run, he always takes a break on a nearby bench and purchases a juice. Seeing an opportunity, Abe decides to poison the judge by procuring cyanide from Rita’s chemistry lab key. He then discretely switches his own juice with that of the judge while sitting on the same bench when the latter is distracted.
