Isle of Dogs (2018)
Isle of Dogs (2018) is a stop-motion animated comedy film written, produced, and directed by Wes Anderson, narrated by Courtney B. Vance. In the year 2038, a canine flu outbreak hits Japan, affecting the fictional city of Megasaki. The virus poses a threat to humans as well. In response, Mayor Kenji Kobayashi implements a decree banishing all dogs to Trash Island. This decision is made despite Professor Watanabe’s pleas for more time to find a cure. The first dog to be deported is Spots Kobayashi, a white and black-spotted canine who happens to be the bodyguard of 12-year-old orphan Atari Kobayashi, the mayor’s distant nephew and ward. Six months later, Atari decides to take matters into his own hands and hijacks a plane to Trash Island (now known as ‘Isle of Dogs’) in search for Spots.
After crash-landing, Atari is rescued by a dog pack led by Chief, an all-black canine who has lived as a stray his whole life. With the pack’s assistance, Atari discovers a locked cage that he thinks holds Spots’ skeleton, but soon learns it is not him. They then repel a rescue team sent by Mayor Kobayashi to retrieve Atari. Determined to find Spots, Atari enlists the help of the pack who agrees to join him. At first, Chief declines but is later persuaded by Nutmeg, a former show dog and female member of the pack. Seeking guidance from wise dogs Jupiter and Oracle, the pack learns that Spots may be held captive by a rumored tribe of cannibalistic dogs in isolation. Meanwhile, Watanabe finally creates a successful serum and shares it with Mayor Kobayashi, who dismisses it. Watanabe objects but is placed under house arrest and ultimately killed by poisoned sushi ordered by Major Domo, the mayor’s right-hand man. Tracy Walker, an American exchange student and pro-dog activist, suspects foul play and begins to investigate. Throughout her investigation, she develops feelings for Atari.
