The miniseries, It (1990), is a two-part psychological horror drama based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. It was directed by Tommy Lee Wallace and adapted by Lawrence D. Cohen. Set in Derry, Maine in 1960 during a heavy rainstorm, young George Denbrough is playing with his paper sailboat in the streets. His older brother Bill, who stutters, made the boat for him. Unfortunately, it ends up going down a storm drain. There, Georgie meets Pennywise the Dancing Clown who entices him to retrieve his boat. Tragically, Pennywise kills Georgie instead. A few months pass and Bill and his friend Eddie befriend new kid Ben Hanscom. Later on, Beverly Marsh joins their group along with Richie Tozier and Stan Uris. Beverly struggles with an abusive father while Stan remains skeptical as a Jewish Boy Scout.
After developing feelings for Beverly, Ben decides to express them through an anonymous poem. However, she mistakenly believes the poem came from Bill and begins to harbor feelings for him. They are all constantly harassed by Henry Bowers and his greaser gang at school, by the creek, and in town. Each child also has their own terrifying encounter with Pennywise, a monstrous creature. Later in July, Mike Hanlon joins the group after being chased by Bowers’ gang. The children, now known as the ‘Losers Club’, use rocks to defend themselves against the bullies. While looking through Mike’s History of Derry project scrapbook, they come to a startling realization that Pennywise, or ‘It’ as they call it, is not human but rather an ancient entity that awakens every thirty years to prey on humans.
