In 2016, Twenty-seven years since Its defeat, Pennywise returns to Derry, Maine. After brutal attacks from homophobic teens at a carnival result in the death of Adrian Mellon and his boyfriend, Mike Hanlon contacts the remaining members of the Losers Club – Bill Denbrough, Ben Hanscom, Beverly Marsh, Richie Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak – for their promised reunion to fulfill their vow to kill Pennywise. Stanley Uris does not join them as he fears for his life and ends up taking his own life. At a Chinese restaurant gathering organized by Mike, Pennywise reveals Stanley’s suicide to the group.
As they consider leaving town out of fear for their lives again, Beverly shares her visions foretelling their deaths if they do not act on their promise. Meanwhile, at a baseball game in town, It lures and kills Victoria using its deceptive tactics. At the library, Mike teaches Bill about a Native American ‘Ritual of Chüd’ that can defeat It. The ritual requires sacrificing items from their past. Bill retrieves his paper sailboat from the storm drain where Georgie died, while Beverly retrieves Ben’s love letter from her old home. Meanwhile, Richie collects a game token at an abandoned cinema and has a confrontation with Pennywise, who exposes Richie’s hidden homosexuality. At the high school, Ben gathers an item for the ritual, while Eddie gets an inhaler from a pharmacy and is attacked by It in the form of the Leper.
