It’s Complicated (2009) is an American romantic comedy written and directed by Nancy Meyers. The film follows Jane, a successful bakery owner in Santa Barbara, California, and Jake Adler, an accomplished attorney who have been divorced for a decade. The former couple shares three children – two girls and a boy. With their youngest child off to college, Jane is left feeling lonely. Meanwhile, Jake has remarried Agness, the much younger woman he had an affair with during his marriage to Jane. While attending their son Luke’s graduation in New York City, Jane and Jake reconnect over drinks and share pleasant memories together. This leads to them spending the night together. However, Jane immediately regrets their actions while Jake is thrilled and continues to pursue her upon their return to Santa Barbara.
The two soon begin an illicit affair. Agness has Jake scheduled for regular fertility clinic sessions, but he is also secretly taking medication to decrease his frequent urination. However, the medication has some adverse effects, causing decreased sperm count and dizziness. After one of his sessions, he meets Jane for lunch at a hotel. Unfortunately, Jake collapses in their room and requires medical attention. The doctor suspects the medication may be the cause and advises him to discontinue it. Jake and Jane’s children are unaware of their secret affair, but Harley, who is engaged to their daughter Lauren, happens to spot them together with the doctor at the hotel which causes considerable stress as he tries to protect their secret.
