By the time he is ten years old, Jack already has the physical appearance of a 40-year-old man. One day, some boys come to his house after hearing rumors about a monster living there. Wanting to scare them off, Jack throws a fake eye covered in slime at them from his window. Living an isolated life with only his parents and tutor Lawrence Woodruff as company has caused Jack to retain childlike tendencies.

Jack initially faces rejection from his classmates due to his appearance when starting school. In a show of support, his father sets up a basketball hoop to help him fit in. Unexpectedly, one day Jack is chosen by Louis to join his team for a game against some bullies and they emerge victorious. Later on, Louis asks Jack to pretend to be the principal to avoid getting into trouble with his mother, Dolores. This leads to the two becoming friends and Louis inviting Jack to hang out in their clubhouse. Eventually, they even involve Jack in obtaining items meant for adults. Amid all this, Jack develops feelings for Miss Marquez, his teacher, but she turns him down causing him great sadness as he falls down the stairs and has to be hospitalized.
