The movie Jack Reacher (2012) is an American action thriller written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. In Pittsburgh, a man drops a coin into a parking meter before driving his van into a garage near PNC Park. From the river’s North Shore Trail, he uses a rifle to fatally shoot five people from a distance before fleeing. Detectives from the Pittsburgh Police Department, led by Calvin Emerson, find the quarter used for parking and a shell casing at the scene. The fingerprint on the coin matches that of James Barr, a former US Army sniper. When investigators search his residence, they discover both the van and rifle and find Barr unconscious. During questioning by Emerson and District Attorney Alex Rodin, he is given two options: confessing to receive life imprisonment or facing certain execution as Rodin has never lost a case.
On a notepad, Barr scribbles ‘Get Jack Reacher’. The man in question is a drifter and former US Army investigator named Jack Reacher. He arrives in Pittsburgh after catching wind of Barr’s case on the news. Despite his request, Emerson and Rodin refuse to show Jack the evidence. However, they do agree to let him see Barr, who is currently in a coma after being attacked by other inmates. Helen Rodin, Barr’s defense attorney and Alex Rodin’s daughter, introduces herself to Jack. She offers to show him the evidence if he agrees to act as her investigator. But Jack declines, stating that he has no interest in exonerating Barr. Instead, he reveals that during his time in Iraq, Barr went on a killing spree against his military contractor victims who were known for raping women during their downtime.
