Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) is an American action thriller film based on the character Jack Ryan from author Tom Clancy’s series. As the fifth film in the franchise and second reboot, it stands apart from previous adaptations by featuring an original storyline. Following the events of September 11, Jack Ryan is a Marine serving in Afghanistan and suffers a critical injury while bravely saving his comrades in a helicopter crash. After a long recovery, he meets Cathy Muller, who assists him during his rehabilitation and eventually becomes his fiancée. It isn’t until ten years later that Jack is recruited by CIA veteran Thomas Harper to work undercover on Wall Street, using financial transactions to uncover potential terrorist activity. However, when a crucial vote at the United Nations goes against Russia and their financial market doesn’t react as expected, Jack uncovers a startling discovery involving billions of dollars linked to Russian oligarch Viktor Cherevin.

Ryan’s employer has a business relationship with one of Cherevin’s companies. When Ryan is unable to access certain accounts as part of his auditing duties, he sees an opportunity to travel to Moscow and conduct an investigation. His journey quickly turns dangerous when he narrowly escapes an assassination attempt by someone pretending to be his bodyguard. Turning to the CIA for assistance, Ryan is surprised to find that Harper is his backup. During their debrief at Staraya Square, Ryan reveals how Cherevin’s global investments leave the US vulnerable to financial collapse if a fabricated terrorist attack were to occur. The next day, Katya meets with Ryan and escorts him to Cherevin’s office where he learns that the problematic company has been sold off, preventing any further auditing attempts.
