Jackie Brown (1997), an American crime film by Quentin Tarantino, is based on the 1992 novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard. A flight attendant, Jackie smuggles money from Mexico into the US for Ordell Robbie, a Los Angeles gun runner. When Ordell’s courier, Beaumont Livingston, is arrested, he enlists the help of bail bondsman Max Cherry to free him. However, after killing Beaumont to keep him quiet, Ordell finds himself in a tight spot when ATF agent Ray Nicolette and LAPD detective Mark Dargus discover the cash and drugs in Jackie’s possession. After his release from prison, Ordell brings in Louis Gara, a former cellmate and criminal associate. Melanie Ralston, one of Ordell’s women, tries to convince Louis to betray Ordell and keep the money for themselves. Louis informs Ordell, who dismisses her concerns as he knows she cannot be trusted completely. Meanwhile, Nicolette and Dargus are planning to catch Ordell in a sting operation involving $50,000. Jackie intends to keep the remaining $500,000 for herself and enlists Max’s help by offering him a share. For their test run at a shopping mall, Jackie smuggles in $10,000 while Nicolette and Dargus are aware of the plan. However, Max notices an unknown woman exchanging bags with Sheronda when Jackie leaves.
