Jarhead (2005)
Jarhead (2005), the American war drama film, is based on Anthony Swofford’s 2003 memoir of the same title. Following the footsteps of his father who served in Vietnam, Anthony enlists in the United States Marine Corps and is sent to Camp Pendleton, California. Though he initially joined the military as an alternative to college, Anthony struggles to fit in at Camp Pendleton and faces difficulty making friends. Despite faking illness to avoid responsibilities, Anthony catches the eye of Staff Sergeant Sykes, who recognizes his potential and offers him a spot at his highly competitive Scout Sniper course. After intense training, eight Marines complete the course including Anthony – now a sniper – and his roommate Corporal Alan Troy, who becomes his spotter.
After being deployed to the Arabian Peninsula as part of ‘Operation Desert Shield’ during the Gulf War (1990-1991), Swofford’s unit grows restless while stuck in Kuwait following the Iraqi invasion. The mundane tasks, constant drills, and routine responsibilities leave them yearning for action. As they pass time, discussions among the Marines turn to their significant others back at home and their possible infidelities. To publicly call out these betrayals, they set up a bulletin board with annotated photos (dubbed a ‘Jodie Wall’). In an effort to add some excitement, Swofford orchestrates an unauthorized Christmas party by securing alcohol and convincing Fergus to cover his watch. Unfortunately, Fergus accidentally starts a fire while cooking sausages and sets off flares, causing chaos and infuriating Staff Sergeant Sykes.
