Jaws (1975), an American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and adapted from the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley, tells the story of a New England beach town called Amity Island. During a late-night beach party, a young woman decides to go for a swim in the ocean but is viciously attacked and pulled underwater by an unseen force. Tragically, her remains are discovered on the shore the next morning. The medical examiner determines it to be a shark attack, prompting newly hired police chief Martin Brody to close the beaches. However, Mayor Larry Vaughn urges him to reconsider, fearing the impact on the town’s summer economy. Under pressure from the mayor, the coroner changes his stance and agrees that it was likely a boating accident. Despite his reservations, Brody accepts this explanation until another victim, young Alex Kintner, is killed at a crowded beach.

This prompts locals to offer a bounty on the shark and sparks an amateur shark-hunting frenzy. Quint, a distinctive and rugged shark hunter from the area, offers his services for a price of $10,000. Matt Hooper, an expert oceanographer, investigates the remains of the girl and confirms that she was killed by a shark of uncommon size. After local fishermen capture a tiger shark, Vaughn assures the public that the beaches are now safe. However, Hooper remains doubtful and proceeds to examine the tiger shark himself. Upon discovering no evidence of human remains in its stomach, he deduces that the true culprit is still at large. While combing the waters at night in Hooper’s vessel, he and Brody stumble upon Ben Gardner’s partially submerged boat.
