Jerry Maguire (1996)
Director and writer Cameron Crowe brought the American sports comedy-drama film Jerry Maguire (1996) to audiences. The titular character is a smooth 35-year-old agent at Sports Management International (SMI). A revelation brought on by criticism from a player’s son causes Jerry to pen a mission statement calling out the dishonesty he sees in his industry. He vows to work with fewer clients and forge stronger, more caring relationships with them. SMI responds by sending Jerry’s apprentice, Bob Sugar, to terminate him at a restaurant. This sparks both men into action as they frantically reach out to every one of Jerry’s clients to maintain their business. Among them is Rod Tidwell, an unhappy Arizona Cardinals wide receiver and one of Jerry’s smaller clients, who tests his commitment during a heated rant about his contract situation.
By the end of their conversation, Bob successfully convinces Jerry’s clients to remain with SMI. As Jerry exits his office, he declares his plans to start his own agency and asks if anyone will join him. Only 26-year-old single mother Dorothy Boyd agrees. Initially, Frank ‘Cush’ Cushman, a highly sought after quarterback prospect, also sticks with Jerry after a personal visit to his home. However, Bob manages to convince Cush and his father, who holds strong values of integrity, to sign with SMI without Jerry’s knowledge. Bob witnesses Jerry spending time introducing Rod, a Black man, to other football executives and uses this as a reason for Cush and his father to switch agencies.
