Jerry & Marge Go Large (2022)
Jerry & Marge Go Large (2022), an American comedy-drama directed by David Frankel and written by Brad Copeland, is based on the true story of married couple Jerry and Marge Selbee from Evart, Michigan. After retiring as a production line manager after forty-two years, Jerry’s first attempt at using his new motorboat ends in an unfortunate accident. While seeking refuge in a local gas station shop, Jerry overhears the clerk discussing the improved odds of winning the WinFall lottery in Michigan due to a “rolldown.” With his background in mathematics, Jerry quickly identifies a statistical loophole that allows for repeated wins. Utilizing this strategy, he withdraws over $2,000 to purchase numerous tickets.
Marge inspires him despite his initial loss. Increasing the sample size would also increase his chances, as he realizes. Jerry is able to turn their $8,000 into $15,000 by emptying their account. However, he can’t keep this win a secret and Marge suggests they take a chance on it. Even though WinFall is no longer available in Michigan, it’s still running in Massachusetts. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, Marge plans a 10-hour road trip and they spend the entire day at a small liquor store in a small town printing the tickets. Their profit is doubled once again. When they return to Evart, Marge proposes the idea of creating a small company that will benefit the whole town. With the help of Jerry’s accountant, GS Investment Strategies is established with shares priced at $500 each. To ensure afterhours access to the WinFall machine, Bill, the liquor store owner, becomes their partner.
