Directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, it tells the story of Tommy DeVito, his brother Nicky, and their friend Nick Massi who perform as The Variety Trio in Belleville, New Jersey in 1951. One day, they meet 16-year-old Frankie Castelluccio, known for his impressive singing voice. He catches the eye of mafia boss Angelo ‘Gyp’ DeCarlo who takes an interest in him. However, when the group attempts a robbery and gets arrested, Frankie gets off with a warning while Tommy goes to prison for six months. Upon his release, Tommy reunites with the group and invites Frankie to join as their lead singer.
Frankie adopts a new professional name, first as Frankie Vally and then as Frankie Valli. During a show, he becomes captivated by a woman named Mary Delgado. They go out to dinner and eventually tie the knot. The band, under the name ‘The Four Lovers’, is seeking a songwriter after Nicky’s departure. Tommy’s associate, Joe Pesci, introduces him to Bob Gaudio, a talented singer-songwriter who attends one of their performances. Impressed by Valli’s singing abilities, Gaudio agrees to join the group. Despite recording multiple demos, they struggle to attract attention. However, producer Bob Crewe offers them a contract while they are in New York City. Upon further inspection, they realize the deal only allows them to provide background vocals for other artists.
