Jersey Girl (2004)
Jersey Girl (2004), a American comedy-drama film written, co-edited and directed by Kevin Smith, follows the story of Oliver ‘Ollie’ Trinké. Ollie is a successful media publicist who falls in love with Gertrude Steiney, a young Latina woman. The two quickly get married and are overjoyed with their relationship. However, after six or seven months of marriage, Gertrude discovers she is pregnant. Despite this exciting news, Ollie becomes consumed with his work and neglects Gertrude in favor of his job. He ignores any signs of her struggling and continues to pile on more responsibilities for himself. Eventually, Gertrude goes into labor on her due date and Ollie reluctantly leaves his office to be by her side. Tragically, Gertrude dies from internal bleeding during childbirth.
To avoid his grief, Ollie immerses himself in work, spending long hours at the office day and night. He refuses to acknowledge his feelings of grief and neglects his newborn daughter, Gertie. Meanwhile, Ollie’s widowed father, Bart, takes a month off from his job with the Jersey City Sanitation Crew to care for Gertie. However, he eventually returns to work, leaving Ollie to face his parental responsibilities alone. In a moment of added pressure and chaos, Ollie is forced to bring Gertie to work with him while he addresses a group of reporters. Amidst a hectic diaper change and a crying baby, Ollie lashes out at one of his clients – Will Smith – in front of the assembled crowd, doubting Smith’s abilities as an action star due to his role in Independence Day.
