Jesus of Nazareth (1977) is an epic film and television drama serial. Directed by Franco Zeffirelli and co-written by Anthony Burgess and Suso Cecchi d’Amico, it tells the story of Jesus’s birth, life, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection. In the screenplay writing process, additional scenes were added for a more concise and dramatic presentation. Some characters, like Zerah, were also included for the same reason. Notably, Judas Iscariot is portrayed as initially well-intentioned but later manipulated by Zerah into betraying Jesus through false flattery and excuses. However, adhering to the Gospels, the film portrays Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea as sympathetic members of the Sanhedrin. While many miracles are not shown in the film, such as changing water into wine at Cana or the transfiguration, it does include notable events like Jesus healing Jairus’s daughter, a blind man and a crippled woman on the Sabbath, feeding a multitude, and raising Lazarus from the dead.

TV Show Jesus of Nazareth creatively combines elements from all four Gospels to tell the story of Jesus, portraying him as both fully divine and fully human. The iconic moments in the life of Jesus are presented in a chronological order, starting with the betrothal and subsequent marriage of Mary and Joseph, followed by events such as the Annunciation and Visitation. Other significant events include John the Baptist’s circumcision, Jesus’ birth and his circumcision, the visit of the Magi, and the tragic Massacre of the Innocents. The film also depicts Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan, where God proclaims ‘this is my beloved son’ through John’s words.
