Joe (1970)
Joe (1970) is an American drama film written by Norman Wexler and directed by John G. Avildsen. The story centers around Advertising executive Bill Compton, his wife Joan, and daughter Melissa who reside in New York’s affluent Upper East Side. Unfortunately, Melissa has been living with her drug-dealing boyfriend and after she overdoses, Compton goes to the boyfriend’s apartment to retrieve her belongings. In a moment of intense anger, he ends up killing the boyfriend. Later on at a local bar, Compton hears Joe Curran expressing his disdain for hippies and jokingly confesses that he just killed one. Surprisingly, Joe reacts positively, but Compton quickly clarifies that it was only a joke. A few days pass and Joe sees a news report about a drug dealer being fatally attacked near the bar. He reaches out to Compton and they meet up.
Initially skeptical that Joe might be trying to blackmail him, Compton soon discovers that Joe holds him in high regard for taking down the dangerous drug dealer. After forming a friendship, Compton and his wife dine with Joe and his wife at their house. Upon Melissa’s escape from the hospital, she returns to their apartment where she overhears her father discussing the murder. Struck with anger, she storms out and confronts Compton, questioning if he plans to kill her as well. Despite Compton’s attempts to restrain her, Melissa breaks away. Both Joe and Compton search for her and eventually encounter a group of hippies at a bar in downtown Manhattan. They are invited to join the hippies’ apartment where they partake in drugs and companionship offered by the group.
