The American Revisionist Western film, Joe Kidd (1972), features renowned actors Clint Eastwood and Robert Duvall. Written by Elmore Leonard and directed by John Sturges, the story takes place in Sinola, a town in New Mexico during the early 1900s. In this setting, we meet Joe Kidd, a disgruntled ex-bounty hunter who is imprisoned for trespassing on Indian land and causing chaos. Luis Chama, a Mexican bandit/revolutionary, has organized a peasant revolt against the local landowners who are forcefully removing the poor from their ancestral lands. During one of Chama’s raids at the courthouse, wealthy landowner Frank Harlan forms a posse to capture him. Initially declining Harlan’s invitation to join, Kidd eventually agrees after learning that Chama’s band has attacked his ranch and harmed one of his workers.

The posse consists of several merciless men, some of whom possess new-style rifles with an increased range compared to older models. As the posse approaches a nearby village, they herd its inhabitants at gunpoint into the church. The group demands Chama’s surrender and threatens to harm five Mexican hostages if he doesn’t comply. In a display of mistrust, Harlan tosses Kidd into the church alongside the other captives. Little did Harlan know, Helen, one of the hostages, is not only Chama’s lover but also a part of his group. However, Kidd manages to escape from his confinement and takes matters into his own hands. He leads Chama and his cohorts to fulfill his request in order to save the hostages. Ultimately, Kidd informs Harlan and the rest of the posse that he intends to bring Chama to Sheriff Mitchell in town for justice to be served.
