A movie John Carter (2012) tells the story of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ uncle who passed away unexpectedly. The film was directed and written by Andrew Stanton, Mark Andrews, and Michael Chabon respectively, and is based on the Barsoom novel series. At the time of his uncle’s death in 1881, Burroughs learned that John had requested to be buried in a tomb that only he could open from inside. He was also given John’s personal journal to read by his lawyer. The plot then rewinds back to 1868 when Carter is arrested by Union Colonel Powell in hopes that he will aid them against the Apache tribe. However, Carter manages to escape but is soon caught up by American soldiers. A confrontation with the Apache leads to him and Powell taking shelter in a cave filled with valuable gold.
A Thern appears in the cave and, caught off guard by the two men, brandishes a knife. Carter defends himself and inadvertently activates the Thern’s powerful medallion, transporting him to Barsoom – also known as Mars. Due to his unique bone density and the planet’s light gravity, Carter possesses extraordinary jumping abilities and unmatched strength. He is soon captured by Tars Tarkas, Jeddak of the Green Martian Tharks. Meanwhile, on Barsoom, the age-old rivalry between the Red Martian cities of Helium and Zodanga rages on. Sab Than, leader of Zodanga with a powerful weapon from Thern leader Matai Shang, proposes a truce by marrying Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium. However, she manages to break free and is saved by Carter.
