Johnny Apollo (1940)
Johnny Apollo (1940) is an American crime film directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Tyrone Power and Dorothy Lamour. Bob Cain, Jr.’s father, known as ‘Pop’ Cain, is sent to prison for embezzlement. Despite their previous close relationship, Bob becomes estranged from his father and drops out of college in search of employment. However, his efforts are unsuccessful due to his father’s infamous reputation. Bob eventually finds work under an alias but is terminated upon the discovery of his true identity. Meanwhile, gangster Mickey Dwyer, also convicted on the same day as Pop, is released on parole. Disappointed with his father’s lawyer, Bob seeks help from Dwyer’s attorney, Emmett T. Brennan. While waiting outside Brennan’s apartment under the name Johnny, Bob meets Lucky Dubarry – Dwyer’s girlfriend – who immediately takes a liking to him. Shortly after, Brennan arrives.
Lucky falsely claims to be acquainted with Bob, who is hesitant to reveal his true identity when questioned by Brennan. In response, he provides the name Johnny Apollo, inspired by a nearby neon sign. Lucky departs, prompting Bob to ask Brennan for advice on securing Pop’s parole. The solution? Paying off the right people. Just then, Dwyer appears and inquires about Johnny. Brennan assures him of Johnny’s character. Dwyer then asks Bob to bail out one of his associates, offering a hundred dollars as compensation. Without hesitation, Bob accepts the task at hand. Eventually, Dwyer offers Apollo a job opportunity which he ultimately accepts in order to make some money quickly. Together they engage in illegal activities (not shown). After accumulating a substantial amount of cash, Bob visits his incarcerated father.
