Johnny Dangerously (1984) is an American crime comedy that cleverly mocks the popular gangster movies of the 1930s. In the film, a pet shop owner catches a young boy stealing a puppy in 1935. Wanting to steer the child away from a life of crime, he recounts a tale through a flashback to 1910. This story follows Johnny Kelly, a poor but righteous newspaper boy in New York City, who is desperately trying to raise enough money for his mother’s surgery. Unfortunately, their family has fallen on hard times since Johnny’s father was put to death and his mother has resorted to doing laundry for others to support her sons. While Johnny’s younger brother shows an interest in law enforcement, Johnny himself gets into a brawl with Danny Vermin that catches the eye of local crime boss Jocko Dundee. Desperate for funds, Johnny accepts Jocko’s offer despite knowing it would break his mother’s heart.

He aids in the heist of a competing club owned by Roman Moronie, a man known for his unconventional use of profanity. Moronie makes it clear that he has a good memory and will never forget a familiar face. When Jocko inquires about his name, Johnny responds with ‘Johnny Dangerously’. As time passes, Johnny chooses to devote all his energy to working for Dundee due to his mother’s ongoing health troubles. Despite everyone being aware that Kelly is actually Johnny Dangerously, Ma and Tommy are under the impression that he owns a nightclub. Similarly, the rest of the gang is oblivious to the existence of Johnny’s mother and brother. One day, when visiting Dundee’s headquarters, Johnny discovers that two new members have joined the gang: Danny Vermin and his sidekick Dutch.
