The film Johnny English (2003), directed by Peter Howitt and written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and William Davies, follows the journey of a bumbling but well-meaning MI7 agent who longs to be the agency’s top spy. When Agent One and all other MI7 agents are killed at his funeral due to his inadvertent blunders, Johnny is left as the only agent capable of completing Agent One’s mission. His latest task is to stop a scheme to steal the newly returned Crown Jewels at an event hosted by French criminal mastermind Pascal Sauvage. While attending the jewels’ unveiling at the Tower of London, Johnny meets a mysterious woman named Lorna Campbell. However, chaos ensues when there is a power outage and the jewels go missing while English accidentally knocks out the head of security. In an attempt to cover up his mistakes, he engages in a fight against an imaginary attacker and gives false information about the culprit to MI7’s leader, Pegasus.
Accompanied by his assistant, Angus Bough, English ventures into an underground tunnel beneath the jewel’s display case. There, he encounters the German thieves Dieter Klein and Klaus Vendetta. The two criminals manage to flee in a hearse. In the midst of the chaos, English switches his focus to a different hearse and ends up crashing a funeral. As it turns out, Sauvage is the mastermind behind Klein and Vendetta’s schemes. Sauvage then instructs them to get rid of English. However, Pegasus refuses to accept this information from English and Bough, and instead orders them to exclude Sauvage from their investigation. To make matters worse, Vendetta launches an attack on English and Bough. Unfortunately, in the confusion, English mistakenly attacks his own colleague allowing Vendetta to slip away once again.
