Johnny Mnemonic (1995) marks the directorial debut of Robert Longo. The film is set in a future where society is heavily reliant on a virtual Internet, leading to a condition known as ‘nerve attenuation syndrome’ (NAS). With megacorporations dominating the world and exacerbating class tensions caused by NAS, Johnny works as a ‘mnemonic courier’. His job involves implanting sensitive data into his brain for discreet delivery to corporations. Currently, he is tasked with transporting data for a group of scientists in Beijing. Initially hesitant due to the data’s size exceeding his memory capacity even with compression, Johnny ultimately agrees when he realizes the payment will cover the cost of removing the device from his brain.
Johnny is under a lot of pressure to retrieve the extracted data within a few days or suffer irreversible brain damage and corrupt the information. To protect the sensitive data, the scientists encrypt it using three random television images. Unfortunately, while transmitting these images to Newark, New Jersey, they are ambushed and killed by yakuza members led by Shinji, who uses a laser whip as a weapon. In order to escape, Johnny must fight off the attackers and manage to grab a piece of the encryption key images. After his harrowing escape, Johnny overhears Shinji reporting his failure to Takahashi, revealing that they are working for Pharmakom – a powerful corporation. During this encounter, Johnny catches glimpses of a female artificial intelligence projection attempting to assist him, but he brushes her off.
