Joker (2019)
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker (2019) is an American psychological thriller film with a screenplay co-written by Scott Silver. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, the loosely based DC Comics story follows Arthur Fleck, an aspiring stand-up comedian and clown living in Gotham City during the early 1980s recession with his mother Penny. Despite suffering from a neurological disorder that causes uncontrollable laughing fits, Arthur relies on social services for medication. Randall, his co-worker, gives him a revolver after he is attacked by street youths. Meanwhile, Arthur pursues single mother Sophie and invites her to watch his comedy routine at a club. However, things take a downward turn when he loses his job at a children’s hospital due to accidentally revealing the gun given to him by Randall – who denies it. On his way back home wearing clown makeup, Arthur is ridiculed and assaulted by drunken businessmen from Wayne Investments; in self-defense, he fatally shoots two of them and murders a third as he tries to escape.
Their billionaire mayoral candidate employer, Thomas Wayne, condemns the killings. However, in Arthur’s image, protesters start wearing clown masks. Due to budget cuts, the social service program is shut down, leaving Arthur without access to his medication. During his stand-up routine, which Sophie attends, he laughs uncontrollably as his jokes fall flat. After intercepting a letter from Penny to Thomas claiming he is Thomas’s illegitimate son, he berates his mother for hiding the truth. At Wayne Manor, he meets Thomas’s young son Bruce but is forced to flee after a scuffle with family butler Alfred Pennyworth. The stress and turmoil ultimately lead Penny to require hospitalization due to a stroke. On popular late-night talk show host Murray Franklin’s show, clips of Arthur’s failed performance are presented and he is mockingly labeled a ‘joker’.
