Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) is a 3D film directed by Eric Brevig, featuring an American cast. Volcanologist Trevor Anderson, living in Boston at the time, was expecting his 13-year-old nephew, Sean, to stay with him for ten days. However, Trevor’s day took a turn when he learned that his brother’s laboratory was closing due to budget constraints. In the midst of the chaos at work, Trevor received multiple messages from Sean’s mother, Elizabeth. Once Sean arrives and Elizabeth leaves to go home, she hands Trevor a box filled with belongings that once belonged to his brother Max – who mysteriously disappeared a decade earlier. As they search through the items together, Trevor shares stories about Max with Sean and shows him a novel written by Jules Verne titled Journey to the Center of the Earth. While flipping through its pages, Trevor discovers handwritten notes left behind by his late brother.
After Trevor discovers that he must travel to Iceland to gain further insight on the mysterious notes, he initially plans to send Sean home. However, Sean protests and convinces Trevor to bring him along. They begin their search for a volcanologist and eventually meet Hannah at his institution. Unfortunately, they learn that the volcanologist has passed away. Hannah reveals that her father and Max shared the belief that Jules Verne’s literature held truth. She offers to assist them in reaching a malfunctioning instrument on top of the mountain. While hiking, a lightning storm forces them into a nearby cave which unexpectedly collapses, trapping them inside. With no other option, they are forced deeper into the cave which turns out to be an abandoned mine.
