Joy Ride (2001) is a thrilling American film directed by John Dahl and written by Clay Tarver and J. J. Abrams. While on a trip from California to Colorado to pick up his childhood crush, Venna, Lewis Thomas is unexpectedly forced to stop in Salt Lake City to bail out his estranged brother Fuller, who has been arrested. Fuller joins Lewis for the ride and takes the opportunity to install a CB radio in the car. The two eavesdrop on truckers’ conversations, and Fuller convinces Lewis to participate in a prank targeting a truck driver known as Rusty Nail. Posing as a woman named Candy Cane, they arrange for Rusty Nail to meet them at their motel. However, things take an unexpected turn when they accidentally target the room of an angry businessman with whom Fuller previously had an unpleasant encounter at the front desk.

When Rusty Nail shows up, the brothers eavesdrop from the next room; they hear a heated exchange and some commotion. The following day, Lewis and Fuller discover that the authorities have located the businessman on the highway. Lewis confesses to their involvement and Sheriff Ritter confronts them about their part in the incident, but eventually releases them. As they continue on their journey, Rusty Nail’s voice comes through on the radio once again, searching for Candy Cane. Lewis confesses to playing a trick on Rusty Nail and he demands an apology, only for Fuller to insult him instead. Rusty Nail then advises them to fix their damaged taillight, hinting that he is still trailing behind them.
