Judge Dredd (1995) is a US sci-fi action movie based on the eponymous character from 2000 AD comics. It is helmed by director Danny Cannon. In the future, Earth is mostly a wasteland and surviving humans are divided between the desolate ‘Cursed Earth’ and the overcrowded Mega-Cities with huge populations. To maintain order, a team of Judges, who serve as law enforcers, judges, juries and executioners all in one, have replaced traditional justice systems. In the year 2139, during a block war in Mega-City One, veteran ‘Street Judge’ Joseph Dredd aids rookie Judge Barbara Hershey. Amidst the chaos, recently released hacker Herman ‘Fergee’ Ferguson seeks refuge inside a food dispensing robot.
After arresting Fergee for city property destruction, Dredd sentences him to five years in prison. Soon after, ex-Judge Rico breaks out of jail and returns to Mega-City One to reclaim his uniform and ‘Lawgiver’ gun. He also reactivates a decommissioned ABC Warrior combat robot, aligning it with himself. Vartis Hammond, a vocal critic of Dredd, is murdered and the suspicion quickly falls on Dredd. The Council Judges, including Griffin and Dredd’s mentor Chief Justice Fargo, oversee his trial. Due to incriminating DNA evidence found on the bullets that killed Hammond (a feature of the Lawgiver unknown to most Judges), Dredd is found guilty. In an effort to save Dredd, Fargo resigns as Chief Justice and requests clemency for him from the Council as his final act in office.
