Jumper (2008) is an American science fiction action film that loosely follows Steven Gould’s novel of the same title. Directed by Doug Liman, the movie centers around 15-year-old David Rice, who discovers his ability to teleport after falling through thin ice on the Huron River while retrieving a snow globe for his crush, Millie Harris. Using this newfound power, he leaves his abusive father behind and moves to New York City where he uses it to rob banks by teleporting into their vaults. Eight years pass and David now lives a lavish lifestyle in a penthouse, spending his days jumping to various exotic locations such as surfing in Tahiti, having lunch on the Sphinx’s head, and picking up women at a London pub. However, things take a turn when he is confronted by Roland, a leader of the Paladins – those who hunt Jumpers whom they believe are abominations.
Despite being armed with weapons that disrupt teleportation abilities, David manages to escape to his hometown of Ann Arbor. After returning to his childhood bedroom, he unexpectedly encounters his former high school bully Mark while looking for Millie at her place of work. A physical altercation ensues and David expertly jumps them into a bank vault, which triggers Mark’s later questioning by Roland. Meanwhile, David successfully convinces Millie to join him on a spontaneous trip to Rome, despite her reservations about his flashy lifestyle. However, their visit to the Colosseum is cut short when David’s trespassing leads to a confrontation with Paladins. Fortunately, Griffin, an experienced Jumper whom David had previously crossed paths with in London, comes to his aid and explains the nature of their pursuers before departing.
