Kalifornia (1993)

Kalifornia (1993), an American road thriller film directed by Dominic Sena, follows the story of Brian Kessler and Carrie Laughlin. Brian, a graduate student and journalist, has recently secured a book deal after his article on serial killers gained attention. In order to gather material for his book, Brian and Carrie plan to travel from Kentucky to California, stopping at notorious murder sites for Carrie’s photographs. However, with limited funds, Brian decides to post a ride-share ad on campus. Meanwhile, Early Grayce, a violent parolee who has just lost his job, is pressured by his parole officer to attend a job interview at the university despite wanting to leave the state. This puts him on a collision course with Brian and Carrie as they embark on their journey.

Upon arriving at the campus, Early spots the ride-share advertisement and immediately contacts Brian. The pair agree to meet the next day. Early then sends Adele ahead while he takes care of his troublesome landlord before joining her to wait for Brian and Carrie. Despite their rough appearance, Brian convinces Carrie to give them a chance on their journey. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to his companions, Early commits another murder and steals money from a man in a gas station restroom. As they reach their first hotel, Early decides to give Adele a new look by cutting off her long hair in an attempt to match Carrie’s style. On another occasion at a different hotel, Early invites Brian out for a game of pool, leaving Adele and Carrie alone together.
