Keeping the Faith (2000)
Keeping the Faith (2000) is an American romantic comedy film written by Stuart Blumberg. In a New York City bar, a drunken Catholic priest named Brian Finn fills the bartender in on the ongoing love triangle involving himself, his best friend Jake Schram (a Jewish rabbi), and their childhood friend Anna Reilly. While Brian has been devoted to his calling as a priest since childhood, he shares his duties at the parish with an elderly priest named Father Havel. Jake, who has been inseparable from Brian since they were kids, is now the youngest rabbi at his synagogue and focuses heavily on his work to the disappointment of his mother, Ruth. Together, they strive to bring a more contemporary approach to religious services and have plans to open an interfaith karaoke community center.
As they catch up, they fondly remember their childhood friend Anna, who they lost touch with when her family moved to California. After 16 years, Anna returns to New York for work and reunites with her two friends. Soon, she and Jake engage in a casual sexual relationship, but their feelings turn romantic. However, Anna’s lack of religious affiliation and Brian’s internal struggle with developing feelings for her complicate things. Brian even contemplates leaving the priesthood to be with her. During dinner, Ruth reveals that she knows about Anna and Jake’s relationship. Later that night, the couple argues about their religious differences and decides to break up. In her distress, Anna reaches out to Brian for support and he rushes to her side, mistaking her tears as a confession of love for him.
