Kelly's Heroes (1970)
Kelly’s Heroes (1970), directed by Brian G. Hutton, is a film set during World War II that blends comedy, drama, and a thrilling heist storyline. As the 35th Infantry Division approaches the town of Nancy in early September 1944, they are met with fierce resistance from the enemy. Despite being ordered to hold their position, one of the division’s mechanized reconnaissance platoons finds themselves caught in a thunderstorm and facing friendly fire from their own mortars. In the midst of chaos, Private Kelly takes action and captures Colonel Dankhopf of Wehrmacht Intelligence. In a twist of fate, Kelly discovers that the colonel is carrying several gold bars hidden beneath lead plating in his briefcase.
Eager to learn more, Kelly cleverly manipulates Dankhopf into revealing that there is a staggering amount of gold – 14,000 bars worth $16 million – stashed away in a bank vault located 30 miles behind enemy lines in Clermont, France. Kelly comes up with a plan to steal the gold and enlists the help of Supply Sergeant ‘Crapgame’ to get the necessary supplies and weapons. The heist idea catches the attention of tank commander ‘Oddball’, who offers to join with his three unattached M4 Sherman tanks. Captain Maitland, their commanding officer, is busy visiting his uncle ‘The General’ (and stealing a yacht), leaving Kelly’s platoon members excited about joining in on the heist.
