Kicking and Screaming (1995)
Kicking and Screaming (1995) is an American romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Noah Baumbach in his directorial debut. The movie follows four 22-year-old friends, Grover, Max, Otis, and Skippy, who have just graduated from college. While Otis is off to graduate school in Milwaukee, the other three are struggling to leave behind the comfort of their friendship within the artificial environment of school. They may end up like their older acquaintance Chet, who has been bartending at a local hangout for the past decade instead of pursuing his career after refusing to graduate. The film takes place over the course of a year, starting from September until the following calendar year. In addition to this timeline, we also see glimpses of aspiring writer Grover’s last year in college with Jane as they planned to live together post-graduation.
