Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Martin Scorsese co-writes, produces, and directs the American epic western crime drama film, Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). Inspired by David Grann’s non-fiction book from 2017, Scorsese and Eric Roth bring the story to life. During the annual ‘flower moon’ phenomenon on their Oklahoma reservation, Osage Nation elders mourn their descendants’ assimilation into White American society while burying a ceremonial pipe. It is during this time that several Osage stumble upon oil gushing from the ground, leading to wealth for the tribe as they retain mineral rights and share in oil-lease revenues. However, due to white court-appointed legal guardians who are legally required to manage the money of full and half-blood members as they are deemed “incompetent”, not all members can fully benefit from their newfound riches. In 1919, Ernest Burkhart returns from World War I to live with his brother Byron and uncle William King Hale on Hale’s large reservation ranch.
As a reserve deputy sheriff and cattle rancher who speaks their language and gives gifts, Hale portrays himself as a friendly benefactor of the Osage people. Ernest and Byron carry out an armed robbery against the Osage community. During Ernest’s time as a cab driver, he comes across Mollie Kyle, whose family holds valuable oil headrights. They fall in love and get married in a traditional Osage ceremony. As their family grows with three children, Hale covertly orchestrates multiple contract killings of wealthy members of the Osage tribe. He manipulates Ernest by promising him a larger share of the headrights if more of Mollie’s loved ones pass away. Unfortunately, Mollie’s mother Lizzie and sister Minnie become victims of this scheme. When Anna, another one of Mollie’s sisters, rebels against Hale’s control, he orders Byron to eliminate her as well. The council and Lizzie blame the white residents on the reservation for these tragedies and call on the tribe to take action.
